The Assembly Rooms

Following catastrophic fire damage, the site was redeveloped into a single new home.

St Aubins has a rich history and wealth of robust materials, textures and colours. On a wider scale Jersey has a tradition of industrial granite warehouses peppered with ironwork. The rust of the iron complements the ore in the granite and creates an unmistakable distinctiveness. These qualities were the inspiration for our proposals.

We enjoyed celebrating St Aubins maritime industrial heritage in the metalwork embedded in the granite façade. Heavy, recessed, fillet-plated and load-bearing. Just a lick of paint to keep the corrosion at bay.

We also enjoyed the malleability of the metalwork, and its ability to doodle wave-forms across the garage doors and railings. The detailing of the metalwork is deliberately legible, expressive and born from a contemporary reinterpretation of familiar structures and building elements. A gentle reminder of place.

The Assembly Rooms was a Jersey Design awards winner in 2024, for the Best Placemaking in the Public Environment category.
